When the young Shah ‘Abbas seized the throne in 1587, the Ottoman Turks and the Uzbeks were encroaching on his empire and, inside Iran, powerful tribes were tearing the country apart. By the time he died, forty-two years later, Shah ‘Abbas had restored Iran’s fortunes through a blend of ruthless ambition and skilfull diplomacy.
